Cilia Flores, full name Cilia Adela Gavidia Flores is a Venezuelan politician, lawyer, and the wife of the current President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro.
She is arguably the most influential female figure within the Venezuelan government and the Chavismo movement.
She is widely known by the Venezuelan people as “La Primera Combatiente” or the First Combatant.
She is a trained lawyer and former head of Venezuela’s National Assembly where she played a central role in shaping the country’s political system and protecting Maduro’s rule.
Early Life and Connection to Hugo Chávez
Cilia Flores was born in 1951 in Tinaquillo, Cojedes State. She studied law at the Santa María University in Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela.
In 1992, Flores rose to prominence as the lead defense attorney for Hugo Chávez following his failed coup attempt same year.
How Cilia met Nicholas Maduro
As Chávez's lead attorney, Cilia Flores was very instrumental in securing the release of Hugo Chávez from prison. This happened in 1994 and she met Nicolás Maduro, who was then a trade unionist and bodyguard for Chávez. They became romantic partners in the 1990s and they later got married in 2013, shortly after which Maduro became president.
Cilia's Political Career
Cilia Flores not only played a ceremonial First lady role of Venezuela, she has held some of the highest offices in the Venezuelan government.
She was president of the Venezuelan National Assembly from 2006–2011. She was the first woman to hold this position. Interestingly, she took over this role from Nicolás Maduro when he was appointed Foreign Minister.
Just one year after her service in the National Assembly, Cilia Flores was appointed Attorney General and she served from 2012–2013. She was the Procurator General of the Republic (the state's head lawyer).
She is a senior member of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

Two of her nephews, Efraín Antonio Campos Flores and Franqui Francisco Flores de Freitas, were arrested by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Haiti.
They were accused of conspiring to smuggle 800 kilograms of cocaine into the United States.
In 2016, a jury in New York found them guilty. During the trial, recordings suggested the men believed their aunt’s political power would protect them. They were sentenced to 18 years in prison.
However, in October 2022, President Joe Biden granted them clemency in exchange for the release of seven Americans wrongfully detained in Venezuela (including the "Citgo 6").
